Just because homes have been built to minimum code requirements for so long OR just because houses have always been built a certain way…
DOES NOT MEAN it is the best way, the healthiest way, or even the correct way.
Here are some of the “Myths” told by some of our sales competition. Here is what “They” might say:
They say you don’t need to worry about Radon! They can’t be more wrong. Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. It comes from the natural break down of uranium in soil and rock, and gets into the air we breathe. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers causing an estimated 21,000 deaths a year! We have a comprehensive active radon mitigation system in every home. We provide you with follow up tests to be sure your home is safe.
They say their houses are just as efficient. They say that they put in a high efficiency furnaces and they are just as good as Energy Star. Then why aren’t they certifying their homes to Energy Star standards? Because it is a monumental task requiring them to do more than they are simply willing to do. Energy Star homes are simply better in every way.
They say their house has a HERS rating and is therefore just as good as our triple certified homes. The HERS rated home may be more efficient than code, but that can cause more problems for your health. Have they brought in fresh air? Have they exhausted stale air? Have they mitigated radon? Have they trapped harmful chemicals in your home now since it is tighter? Have they provided a home that might back-draft their water heater and suck carbon monoxide back into the home? Have they provided an advanced water management system that eliminates mold spores in the home? Have they included an air filter system that eliminates fine dust particulates? Have they performance tested the system to be sure it is operating correctly as designed? When you build a tighter home, we believe the builder has a responsibility to mitigate all known health risks.
They say our houses are built too tight and that you can’t make a house that tight… that it needs to breath. This is just an excuse for them to keep building homes like they always have. Our houses are tested to see how tight they are and how much make up air is needed. Then we incorporate a state-of-the-art ventilation system called an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV). This greatly reduces allergy and asthma causing pollutants and other toxins, ridding homes of bad air while pulling in fresh filtered air. The regular code built home relies on “leakiness” to supply the fresh air. It does that, but it also lets in tremendous amounts of dust and pests, such as spiders, cockroaches, and other unwanted visitors. Simply put, our EPA certified Indoor airPlus homes are healthy for you and your family.
They say their homes are “green” when all they have done is add 1 or 2 “green” features. That is called “Green Washing” (google it). For a home to be green, it has to be third party certified to a set of stringent standards. The ICC700 National Green Building Standard certification provides independent, third-party verification that a home is designed and built to achieve high performance in six key areas: Site Design, Resource Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, & Building Operation and Maintenance. Every home we build is certified to this standard.
They say they don’t waste resources but their dumpsters will tell a different story. We have practices to reduce waste in the first place and recycle what we can. It is not the easy way, just the right way.
They don’t tell you that the “new home smell” you are smelling in their model homes are actually harmful VOC’s off-gassing from their paints and carpet. VOC’s are a known cancer causing carcinogen. Take a deep breath in one of our homes, you will smell the difference.
They say their houses are not at all harmful yet they are full of VOC’s, formaldehyde, and radon.
They don’t even bring up allergies and allergens because their houses are full of dust, pests, and other allergens.
So what does all of this mean to you, and your family???
